Hockney's Spring in Charcoal

The Pace show included a series of Hockney's charcoal drawings Woldgate, The Arrival of Spring in 2013 (twenty thirteen).

These drawings are divine and warranted much more viewing time than the prints. It was impossible to avoid comparing the two, and the drawings highlighted the limits of technology. In the most traditional of materials Hockney's mark is more interesting, more varied and more textural than in the larger ipad prints. The drawings remain small and intimate while the flashing chromatic prints are large and loud. It was a little schizophrenic as an exhibition.
