Hockney's Arrival of Spring

David Hockney's adoption of the ipad as a canvas received a lot of attention, but the first show I saw of the work displayed on ipads didn't interest me. The over saturated colour of the ipad screen seemed divorced from reality so I brushed the work off as gimmicky. After visiting Hockney's October show, The Arrival of Spring at Pace I can eat my words. The printed ipad drawings at 46 x 35" marvelously retain that saturation and at this scale expose each mark that constructs the drawing.

The work is created out of doors on his ipad and printed with an inkjet printer (for more on his process read Claire Miller's Article). I included a bunch of details, for anyone that's painted with a stylus you'll recognize that mark, but at a different scale.
