Jockum Nordström in NOLA

Jockum Nordström's first US solo show at the New Orleans Contemporary was a mixed bag. Billed as a "demonstration of a practice guided by improvisational logic, an unremitting tempo, and perpetual discovery through space-time delimited by ungoverned borders" it instead felt contrived and hermetic. Those were two feelings I was not expecting with Nordström's work and it was the installation rather than the work itself that felt standoffish. Reflective glass frames and plywood vitrines abound and made it difficult to see the work. Nordström's collages and pencil drawings are cartoony constructions of a surreal world and his materials and sense of touch are critical components of this goofy universe. The quirky low tech mobile cave and match box sculptures had the greatest appeal.
