Since the 1970's Howardena Pindell has been working with unstretched canvas, hole punches, stencils, squeezes, manilla folders and more. Her process oriented work, influenced by African textiles and decorative arts, is an encrustation, a surface patinaed by her working and reworking of canvas. Strips of canvas form the armature of the painting and layers of paint and collaged material a monochromatic field coalesces until the smallest hint of color flickers beneath the surface rewarding the slow viewer.
