Nancy Mitchnick in Detroit

Nancy Mitchnick returned to her hometown Detroit about five years ago and turned her eye to now well documented decline of a once great city. Rather than romanticizing an past architectural grandeur Mitchnick observes the mundane, the small neglected bungalow, the wallpaper and paint remains of a neighboring building, the burnt and derelict houses. The subject mater may be bleak but the painting is vigorous and alive, focusing on the intense sunlight reflecting off the snow and illuminating spaces that might feel otherwise oppressive.  An exhibition catalog is in the works and I'm looking forward to a little insight from the curator Jens Hoffman.
