The monumental landscapes of
Lawren Harris are gathered in the exhibition "The Idea of North" at the
Hammer Museum. Rooted in the landscape of Canada Harris' paintings are monumental idealizations of the vast north, evocative of the spiritual power of landscape. Painted in the 1920's and 1930's the influence of modernism and abstraction is evident the work makes me think of the Georgia O'Keefe's paintings of natural forms was making around the same time.
